Case Study

Vellinge, Sweden

Customer Challenge

Vellinge municipality manages its street lighting in close collaboration with a local operating partner, making day-to-day operational efficiency a key priority. The lighting infrastructure needs to be easy to monitor, control, and maintain in order to reduce unnecessary work and ensure reliable public lighting services.

Before implementing structured public lighting control, many operational tasks required manual site visits. Adjustments, switching, and fault verification were often handled on location, even when the issue could have been resolved remotely. In addition, inconsistent switching behavior sometimes leads to unnecessary fault reports and repeated checks, increasing workload for maintenance teams.

While operational processes were already well established, the municipality sought greater visibility and control across the lighting estate to support more efficient maintenance, faster troubleshooting, and better day-to-day decision-making.

Solution

With GreenStreet, Vellinge implemented a public lighting control solution focused on improving operational efficiency and day-to-day usability for the operating partner. Together, they established a control structure and operational insight within a unified management environment.

Map overview and remote switching allow lighting to be controlled and verified centrally, reducing the need for on-site visits. Alarm-based fault handling helps identify where issues occur in the infrastructure, enabling faster and more targeted troubleshooting. The system provides actionable insights that support better preparation before field work.

Synchronised operation across the lighting network improves predictability and reduces unnecessary fault reports caused by inconsistent switching behaviour.

In parallel, Vellinge continues a stepwise infrastructure renewal where new LED luminaires are prepared for individual control through Zhaga sockets, enabling more advanced functionality over time.

Connected lighting control makes daily operation more efficient - from remote switching and synchronised operation to clearer fault indications and more targeted troubleshooting.

Results & Summary

Vellinge has improved the efficiency and clarity of its lighting operations by moving from manual, site-based processes to a more connected and data-driven approach. Operational teams now benefit from better visibility, more reliable system behavior, and more precise fault information.

This has reduced unnecessary site visits, improved troubleshooting speed, and supported a more effective maintenance workflow in collaboration with the operating partner. The municipality demonstrates that smart lighting does not need to begin with advanced smart-city applications.

Even at an early stage, connected control delivers clear operational value through better control, clearer alarms, and improved coordination of daily maintenance activities.
