Case Study

Eskilstuna, Sweden

Customer Challenge

Eskilstuna is undertaking a long-term renewal of its street-lighting infrastructure across both Eskilstuna and Torshälla. The municipality’s objectives extend beyond replacing aging lighting assets; the goal is to create a lighting infrastructure that supports current energy-efficiency targets while remaining adaptable to future technological and operational needs.

The existing switching infrastructure had reached end of life and offered limited control and insights. Eskilstuna wanted to modernise its lighting estate through LED conversion and make sure that the investment in the new lighting control system would not limit future opportunities.

The challenge was therefore to replace an outdated control systems and also establish an open and scalable infrastructure that could evolve alongside the city’s ambitions and support future smart-city services.

Solution

Working with Capelon, Eskilstuna has implemented GreenStreet public lighting control to support both immediate operational requirements and long-term strategic development.

Together, they established a solution that combines cabinet control and monitoring, connected lighting infrastructure, and operational insight within a unified management environment.

The modernisation combines LED renewal, cabinet-level control, and individual luminaire control to create a more flexible and intelligent lighting infrastructure. The LED technology combined with individual luminaire control supports significant energy-efficiency improvements and provides greater flexibility in how lighting can be adapted over time.

A key aspect of the approach is openness. The system is designed to support future expansion, including the potential addition of third party sensorsand digital services. This ensures that the lighting network can serve as a platform for future innovation and do not become a standalone utility system.

Smart lighting is about building an open infrastructure that supports today’s energy goals while preparing the city for future services.
